"Celebrating the Past, Inspiring the Future."
At the heart of the Lejeune Institute is a mission to document history, connect communities, and provide resources to amplify Black-focused narratives across Canada. Our work bridges the gaps in understanding Black history and creates a platform for education, representation, and progress.
Our Mission
Lejeune Institute is dedicated to preserving, archiving, and promoting Canadian Black history by ensuring the stories, contributions, and achievements of Black Canadians are recognized, celebrated, and integrated into the national historical narrative. Through research, digital archiving, and public engagement, we strive to create an accessible, well-documented resource that safeguards the legacy of Black communities in Canada for future generations.
Our Vision
Our vision is to establish Lejeune Institute as the central data hub for Canadian Black history—a trusted institution for preserving historical records, educating the public, and advocating for the rightful place of Black Canadians in history. We aim to create a future where Canadian Black history is acknowledged not just in February, but 365 days a year, shaping a more inclusive and accurate historical landscape in Canada.
Mandate
Lejeune Institute is committed to:
- Preserving & Archiving – Digitally and physically documenting key events, figures, and contributions of Black Canadians.
- Research & Data Structuring – Organizing historical records into an accessible and well-structured database for educational and public use.
- Education & Awareness – Hosting events, discussions, and initiatives that highlight the importance of Black Canadian history.
- Advocacy & Recognition – Ensuring that the role of Black Canadians is acknowledged as an essential part of the nation’s history.
- Year-Round Celebration – Promoting Black history beyond Black History Month, ensuring a 365-day commitment to awareness and education.
Lejeune Institute believes that Black history is Canadian history, and we are dedicated to ensuring its preservation, representation, and rightful place in the national conversation.
