"Celebrating the Past, Inspiring the Future"
At the heart of the Lejeune Institute is a mission to document history, connect communities, and provide resources to amplify Black-focused narratives across Canada. Our work bridges the gaps in understanding Black history and creates a platform for education, representation, and progress.
Our Mission
The Lejeune Institute supports the emergence of Black-focused narratives of Canada, on paper, by broadcast, in archival documentation or by oration. Thus, to understand the Canadian Black history landscape and to increase cultural literacy and enhance the sense of belonging, we will map its constituents and bring together its scholars and gatekeepers.
Our Vision
We aim to create a future where Canadian Black history is acknowledged not just in February, but 365 days a year, shaping a more inclusive and accurate historical landscape in Canada.
Mandate
Lejeune Institute is committed to:
- Preserving & Archiving – Digitally and physically documenting key events, figures, and contributions of Black Canadians.
- Research & Data Structuring – Organizing historical records into an accessible and well-structured database for educational and public use.
- Education & Awareness – Hosting events, discussions, and initiatives that highlight the importance of Black Canadian history.
- Advocacy & Recognition – Ensuring that the role of Black Canadians is acknowledged as an essential part of the nation’s history.
- Year-Round Celebration – Promoting Black history beyond Black History Month, ensuring a 365-day commitment to awareness and education.
Lejeune Institute believes that Black history is Canadian history, and we are dedicated to ensuring its preservation, representation, and rightful place in the national conversation.
